ETF Covered Calls 07-31-2009

The cheerleaders on CNBC don’t sync with the jeers of the ETF-Cashinator.   I’m still seeing a great deal of volatility for the remainder of the year so I expect a turbulent market moving forward.  My main worry is a steep climb up followed by a hard crash down and all signs are pointing to a September catastrophe but anything can happen.

Here are this weeks picks:

OIH popped up to $107 and I’m seriously considering cashing out at $110 and staying in cash.  I took a look at the ETF-Cashinator and it shows messy volatility through February 2010.  I can only surmise that we’ll have higher highs and lower lows from now till then unless something dramatically changes.   The October $110 strikes for OIH look very tempting and if the economy begins recovery in 2010 then it would be prudent to hold OIH till then but I’m still undecided.   Let’s not forget that many states are broke and many are running out of unemployment funds and a big chunk (500,000+) of people will run out of money within the next month or two just in time for back to school.

Here is the ETF-Cashinator report for today.

July expiry is here and OIH didn’t breach the $110 mark so I’m still holding on to those 400 shares of OIH.   The August and October options look fairly savory but I may opt to simply liquidate.   If things with the economy don’t improve soon it’s not out of the question for oil to drop down to $30 or $20 per barrel in the upcoming months.   The ETF-Cashinator is showing a great deal of volatility for August calls & puts so no reprieve there.

What a mess!   The ETF-Cashinator is showing trash for August and September covered call options (and beyond) so we’re back to square one.  My OIH seems to have dipped way below $110 and my options will likely expire next week.  I still have hopes for a rally during hurricane season to cash out.   Things aren’t looking good from the ETF-Cashinator standpoint.

First week of July closed with a big down slide and I’m not surprised.   The ETF-Cashinator was showing a great deal of volatility for July back in June and I’m sorry to report that August and September have officially gone trash.   July is still volatile and I don’t think we’re headed for greener pastures.
