Trades - Buy/Write DDM/DDMFX & XHB/XXJFT

Couple of trades in my arbitrage account today.  Bought 400 DDM @ $74.30 and sold 4 DDMFX  at $1.75 to rake in about $700.  Also bought 400 more XHB at $19.80 and sold 4 contracts XXJFT at $0.75 to rake in about $300.   These two trades represent 2% and 3.8% returns respectively with each having some upside potential of another point or two.

ETF Covered Calls 05-16-2008

Options Expiry is finally here! Much to report….I closed out my DDM/DDMEZ position yesterday in my mini account and some other activity:

In my arbitrage account, OIHER will definitely be assigned and my OIH shares will be sold at $190. My other positions, XXJEW, will expire worthless and I’ll get to sell more calls for June with XHB.

In my power account, my EEBEA calls will be assigned and my EEB shares will be sold at $53. Most of my accounts will have hefty cash balances and this is the position I like to be in going into the summer. Peak driving season, hurricane season and other world events have me positioned correctly.

It’s time to look forward to June ETF Covered Calls and here are this weeks ETF-Cashinator picks:

Trade - Buy To Close DDMEZ/DDM

I closed my positions in DDM and DDMEZ today. I bought back my DDMEZ options for $1.55 and had previously sold them for $1.90. I sold DDM at $79.12 where I had purchased at $77. Overall I made 3% with the transaction which meets my profit goals. I normally let my options expire or get exercised but I’m expecting DDM to possibly dip low tomorrow/next week and I’ll pick it up again in my Mini-Account when it does…..

ETF Covered Calls 05-09-2008

Only one more week before May expiry and after May the dog days of summer make the market lazy and shallow but we’ll see how this year turns out.   As a special treat, I’m adding May and June calls to the ETF-Cashinator report this week.

When Covered Call Options Convert to Non Standard Options

I’d been traveling again and I failed to notice that my OIHER call options had undergone a change. I figured I’d write about it since I’ve been asked this question before in the past.

If you read the news, you might have heard that National Oilwell has acquired Grant PrideCo and these two companies were components of the Oil Holders Trust (OIH). I had sold two contracts on OIH for May expiry so now those options have changed from OIHER to OKVER. Essentially what has happened in the transaction was that a dividend was paid out for each 100 shares of OIH so that “excess” money has to be accounted for somewhere in the options record and thus you have the adjustment.

Nothing bad will come of this except it becomes interesting to keep track of the options should you choose to close out your position. Oh yeah, I just raked in another $416.00 with this ETF. For more details, you can read about it here.
